Zen Wellness Space and how it all started

On the morning of December 17, 2018, at 7:40 am the idea of Zen Wellness Space was birth into the world. The day after my daughter’s 2nd birthday I knew it was finally time to do something for me. Something outside of being a mom, wife, employee, sister, friend. The wellness world was calling my name. My dear friend introduced me to Yoga with Adriene and after my first flow on the mat, I was hooked on finding what feels good. I competed to Adriene’s first 30 day yoga challenge and dove headfirst in the world of wellness.

At that time it was hard for me to find people that looked like me having a conversation about wellness. All I saw were a bunch of skinny blondes in yoga pants and that did NOT resonate with your girl. I had a strong feeling that a lot of moms especially Black moms and those with marginalized backgrounds felt the same. Feeling that they were not represented in the wellness conversation. That is when I decided to create my own seat and pull up to the wellness table. As a result, Zen Wellness Space was born. I decided to blog about my wellness journey in hopes to inspire others that might be feeling the same. To show them that they are not alone in this wellness journey.

The Meaning Behind Zen Wellness Space

When thinking of a name for this passion project I knew that I wanted to create something around Wellness but seeing all of the wellness accounts in the internet streets left me lost and confused. So I did what any girl would do kee kee with her friends and ask their opinion. One friend told me that I had a calming voice and brought a calming presence to all situations. I looked up different works around calm and the one that resonated most was Zen. Then I thought about the space and community that I wanted to cultivate and what better place than a Zen Wellness Space.

Zen

The goal of meditation is not to control your thoughts, but to not let them control you.

When I was trying to think of a name for this wellness space the one word that resonated with me the most, and incorporated the feel that I was looking for was Zen.

There are many different definitions of Zen. From my research, I found the term Zen is derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the Middle Chinese word 禪 (chán), an abbreviation of 禪那 (chánnà), which is a Chinese transliteration of the Sanskrit word of dhyāna ("meditation").

Zen emphasizes rigorous self-restraint, meditation practice, insight into the nature of the mind. I can not have this space without paying homage and recognizing the Asian community.

The word Zen amongst many other great things of wisdom came from the East.
